African Geography - Climate

  • Places near the equator are warm almost all year because the sun is directly overhead
  • All over Africa the climate is warm throught the whole year
  • An arid climate is present in much of North Africa
  • The climate varies throughout the large subregion of "Central and Southern Africa"
  • Regions in "Central and Southern Africa" include tropical wet, tropical wet and dry, humid subtropical, and marine west coast
  • In East Africa near the Sahara there is a semiarid and arid climate
  • At Mount Kilimanjaro and Ethiopian Highlands the climate is wet and cool this is called a highlands climate
  • In North Africa near the the Mediterranean Sea, there is a Mediterrenean climate
  • In West Africa near the south it is tropical wet and dry and in the north it is arid and semiarid

Connections -
Table One - Physical Features
  • Different elevations and placing of different terrains directly connect to the overall climate, like in the ethiopian highlands, where the high elevations make for colder temperatures
  • The Sahara desert, for example, is a hot and dry climate since rivers and other bodies of water do not wet the climate regularly
  • The climate could effect population because people might want to live somewhere cold and that could raise the population
  • It could also effect it because if its really warm somewhere you could get more diseases and people would not want to live there and that could decrease the population
  • People do and do not like to live in some climates

Table Three (Vegetation):
  • Where the red zone (BWh) in Northern Africa is, there is mostly desert.
  • Where the light blue zone (Auv) is in Central Africa, there is Weedland and Grass.
  • Where is the dark blue section (Af) is in Central Africa, it is mainly forests. These are probably Broadleaf Evergreen forests, or the rainforest.
  • Southern Africa is a mixture of different climates as well as a mixture of different vegetation zones.

  • The maps correspond with the vegetation in the way that the different colors are around the same size and place as on ours.
  • We also found that in the places you had yellow we had a zone that was in the same place.

Group 4 connections ( Current events )

Our's:
  • The Chinese demand for exotic hardwood is causing problems for people and animals.
  • Many people and wild life depend on the trees in Madagascar.
Your's:
  • In East Africa near the Sahara there is a semiarid and arid climate.
  • The climate could effect population because people might want to live somewhere cold and that could raise the population

Connections:
  • In our the demand is causeing problems for the people and animals. And in your's the "demand for more land by the sahara" is making a problemfor the people and animals.
  • The wildlife depends on the trees in Madagascar and the population growth depends on the climate in Africa.
